Tkvarcheli Power Station
Tkvarcheli Thermal Power Plant was a Gas Power Plant which consisted of 4 xE-220/110 Boilers and 2 G/T units. The first unit was commissioned in 1977 and the last in 1979 built by Sakhydroenergomsheni (Sakhydro)
During the Georgian / Abkhazian war of 1992-1993 the Georgian forces lay siege to Tkvarcheli which lasted from October 1992 to September 1993. The power-plant was bombed by Georgian forces in the first days of the siege and the residents of the town went without power for nearly a year.
After the war some people slowly returned to the town, although the population is now only a small percentage of what it once was and any potential growth in the towns industry is hampered by Abkhazias non official country status. Several vessels, loaded with coal from Tkvarcheli have been seized in international waters by the Georgians who consider any outside investment into Abkhazia as illegal.
