STASI Hospital
Just down the road from the Hospital of the Ministries is a hospital solely for members of the STASI and their families.
Who are the STASI?
STASI was the common naem for "Ministerium für Staatssicherheit", or MfS" which translates to Ministry for State Security, was the official state security service of the DDR (East Germany). It has been described as one of the most effective and repressive intelligence and secret police agencies to have ever existed.
One of its main tasks was spying on the population, mainly through a vast network of citizens turned informants, and fighting any opposition by overt and covert measures, by the time that East Germany collapsed in 1989, the Stasi employed 91,015 employees and 173,081 informants. About one out of every 63 East Germans collaborated with the Stasi. By at least one estimate, the Stasi maintained greater surveillance over its own people than any secret police force in history!
As you can imagine the STASI were very secretive and therefore their own hospital for them and their families was essential, the care in the hospital was second to none with same benefits as the Ministry Hospital next door
After the fall of the wall the STASI was disbanded in 1990 and the hospital was re-purposed by the Helios group and used for several years until they opened a new complex nearly. Only a few of the original features of the STASI hospital remain and most of the ward have been stripped for anything valuable. That said it still a nice wander with some nice views from the roof.
