sam missile Base Bratislava
Located at the highest point of the Carpathian mountain range just outside Bratislava (and quite a walk!) is a former S-125 AA missile base.
The mountain range that the base sits on top of is 541 metres high and less than 1.5km away from the Austrian border which in 1980 when it was built gave it a great vantage point (and range) over the west.
The base itself is quite small but at one point apparently according to those that served these held over 50 surface to air missiles with a range of 25km. The weight of the warhead on each missile was 60kg and the overall weight of each missile was 950kg
The collapse of communism brought and end to the Soviets and their need to station missiles along the former Warsaw pact Border, Slovakian forces took control of the base and although it gradually fell into disuse it was guarded untill 2012.
