netherne cemetery
Netherne was a Lunatic Asylum Built in Surrey, designed by GT Hine and opened in 1905.
Sadly Natherne like most mental hospital suffered a steady decline through the 1970's and 80's untill its final closure in 1993. Netherne sat empty and derelict for 10 years before redevolpment started and "Netherne on the Hill" housing complex was born with a mix of old buildings including the Administration and Water tower as housing and the former Chapel as a Gym. New build houses create a warren of roads.
At the back of the site is a football pitch and tucked right in the corner is the old asylum cemetery, there is not much left apart from half a sign and a grave or two but it is a stark reminder on how quickly times change and how things get forgotten.
