terre rouge - ore bunkers
Terre Rouge is located in the south of the small country of Luxembourg right next to the French border; it is named after the bright red of the ore that was originally the success of the steel industry in Luxembourg in the industrial age, the literal translation is “Red Earth”.
The area was used for Steel production which started in the 1840’s, production by 1911 was one of the largest in the world, the area grew to encompass many factories to reach peak production in 1974 when the natural resources dwindled, by the 1980’s the whole area was in decline and the plants one by one closed . Now the area is being redeveloped and the government promotes the cycle routes thought the area .
The Terre Rouge area will soon be the future campus of the University of Luxembourg!
