STASI Command Bunker
When is a reservoir not a reservoir ..... When it’s a Stasi Command Bunker!
Built between 1973 – 1976, the command bunker was to be used as a main control point for the district in times of crisis and would have housed 130 people for 1 year in the case of a conventional attack, if there was a nuclear war 6 – 8 days!
The bunker was run by the STASI (The Ministry for State Security, German: Ministerium für Staatssicherheit, MfS) and with all things STASI it was very secret, the entire bunker was built first and a fake reservoir was built on top, all supplies that came into the area came into the compound disguised as components found at an actual reservoir, all food tins that were destined for the bunker were relabelled pipe glue!
Disguises were also present in the above ground complex that housed the workers and guards, the accommodation was made to look like a hunting lodge hotel and all personnel had to wear hunter’s camouflage to complete the appearance.
After the fall of the wall the complex was bought and the fake hotel was refurbished as a real hotel and tours of the bunkers commenced, you can even book an overnight stay in the bunker complete with a barbeque and Rotkaeppchen.
