pioneer camp
The Vladimir Lenin All-Union Pioneer Organization (Всесою́зная пионе́рская организа́ция и́мени В. И. Ле́нина) was a youth organisation on a mass scale in the Soviet Union. It was founded on May 19 1922 and ran for 69 years until 1991.
The Pioneer camps were run along the same structure as Scouting groups, the organisational motto was "Always prepared" which in itself is a reworking of the Scouting phrase "Be prepared". There were 3 age structures within the organisation children of 10–11 years were called Young Pioneers of the first stage; 11–12 years were Young Pioneers of the second stage; 13–15 years were Young Pioneers of the third stage. At age 15, Young Pioneers could join Komsomol - The Young Communist League, with a recommendation from their Young Pioneer group leader.
The location that we visited was a Pioneer Camp a place where children went during summer and winter holidays. They were all free of charge and sponsored by the government and the Trade. Pioneers took part in a range of activities including sports, ceremonies and performances, this camp even had a science building , which was the large wooden structure at the bottom of the site which has now collapsed in on itself.
After the ban of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1991, the organization had to disband, there are apprently ideas to reintroduce them at a State Level in Russia and Belarus.
