CF Schröder Abrasives
We had walked past this large factory a few time journeying to and from the town to the garage when the alternator went on the car cutting short our other plans and giving us an unplanned 2 day stop in a town in Germany.
There were a couple of guys working in one of the front buildings so we asked in broken German, holding up our cameras if we could have a look, they didn't seem to fussed and let us in.
We didn't know what the factory was or what had happened but luckily in the office area someone had printed out a timeline of the building and the company.
CF Schröder was a company founded in 1828 which produced millstones, grindstones, grindstones, whetstones and polishing stones and abrasives. In 1939 the company is honored with a "Golden Flag" as "National Socialist model company", which was a Nazi award given to companies which exemplified the National Socialist way of life. By 1940 272,763 enterprises participated in the scheme with 2,923 companies gaining the golden flag.
The company survived the war and kept making abrasives until 2002 when money issues caused in to be sold to the SpringWater company, who it appeared promised investment that would help the company but the print out states that they did not comply and this factory finally closed in 2009.
