atkinson morley
Atkinson Morley Hospital was opened in a suburb of Wimbledon in 1869, after a donation by a wealth hotel owner aptly named Atkinson Morley. The donation that he gave was very generous £100,000 (approx. £11 million in today's (2015) money) and this allowed not only for a convelsant hospital but also the purchase of 28 acres of neighboring land.
During WWII Neurosurgery Unit was established at Atkinson Morley Hospital by the neurosurgeon Sir Wylie McKissock and had its own helicopter landing pad.
In the 1960's The Wolfson Neurorehabilitation Centre was built next door to Atkinson Morley Hospital. This provided specialist rehabilitation and outpatient services to patients from across south west London and Surrey until 2012, when services moved into new homes at the nearby Queen Mary’s and St George’s Hospitals.
