Katarina naval base
On the Northern side of Pula bay sits a former Naval Base, originally built as part of the Austro-Hungarian defence system of the City of Pula and further extended during Italian rule, including a 250 m long bridge connecting the island with the mainland
During Yugoslavian times a Naval Dive centre was built and part of this can still be seen on the island. During the Yugoslavian war the buildings came uder heavy fire the remnants of which can still be seen today especially at some of the higher windows that face the sea.
After the war and the creation of Croatia the base fell into disuse and ruin, there have even been festivals held in the grounds. The whole site has been decreed a object of cultural heritage but despite this there are current plans to develop the area into a large Marina consisting of 2 ports with the total capacity of 500 sea berths and 400 berths on land.
